JOB DESCRIPTION

Job Title: Medical Device Development Engineer (Contract)

Primary Function of Position:

The Ion Instruments and Accessories New Product Development (NPD) department is seeking an individual to support next generation design and development projects. This individual will work closely with other NPD team members and cross functional engineering teams to design, build, and test new design concepts.

Roles & Responsibilities, as assigned:

  • Build and test prototypes to discover behaviors and failure modes for proposed design concepts.
  • Develop robust and creative test methods to facilitate rigorous understanding of the design – not just how a design behaves, but why.
  • Contribute to design ideation and iteration.
  • Identifies and presents problems that arise during testing, and escalates new or persistent failure modes to appropriate engineering teams
  • Collaborate with appropriate engineering teams to drive failure investigation and root cause analysis.
  • Clearly document and communicate test methods, results and observations.
  • Ensures successful, on-time completion of department projects; communicates constraints to direct management when successful project completion is at risk
  • Comply with company Department and Standard Operating Procedures

Skills, Experience, Education, & Training:

Education and/or Experience:

  • Earned or is working towards a BS in Mechanical, Biomedical, Robotics or Mechatronics Engineering or similar degree.
  • No work experience required, but internship within medical device industry and/or hands-on participation in collegiate level engineering or robotics competition is highly preferred

Technical Skills:

  • Strong mechanical engineering fundamentals
  • Proficiency with CAD software (Solidworks highly preferred)
  • Experience using tools and measuring equipment (e.g. Instron Load Frames, Vision systems (e.g. Keyence VHX), Force Gauge, Torsional testers, Pressure Gages, Multimeters, Oscilloscopes, Data Acquisition systems)
  • Ability to perform the mechanical engineering calculations needed to support equipment design, including dimensional analysis and free-body analysis.
  • Proficiency with MATLAB, Excel, Python, and/or Arduino is a plus
  • Experience with applying statistical techniques and using statistical software is a plus

Other skills and abilities:

  • Proactive and self-motivated engineer.
  • Must be a quick learner with the ability to understand complex products and processes.
  • Ability to work in a team environment.
  • Ability to work independently and with minimum supervision.
  • Ability to multitask, and handle tasks with competing priorities effectively.
  • Ability to work with biological samples, including blood, tissue and organs.
  • Familiar with GDP (good documentation practices).

  • Accepting and adhering to high ethical, moral, and personal values in decisions, communications, actions, and when dealing with others

Location / Travel:

  • Role is set schedule and based in Sunnyvale, California. Ability to travel (up to 10%) as needed to support programs at other facilities

Contract Duration:

  • Part-time may be considered
  • Contracts are typically given for 1 year and assessed annually
