VACANCY ANNOUNCEMENT PUBLIC HEALTH ENGINEER TRAINEE GRADE 13 ORANGE COUNTY DEPARTMENT OF HEALTH Applications are now being accepted to fill the position of Public Health Engineer Trainee at the Department of Health. This position is allocated to the competitive class. The nature of this appointment is temporary substitute. Once the permanent holder attains status in another position, the position will become provisional pending the outcome of a Civil Service Examination. Civil Service examination will be announced at a later date. The trainee level is used to recruit into the public health engineering field, individuals who demonstrate a career interest in the public health engineering field with County government. Trainees receive on-the-job training while performing increasingly responsible and independent activities in the field of public health engineering as it applies to one or more of the specialized phases of the public health engineering program. Direct supervision may be received from Public Health Engineers or other technical superiors during the training period with final review of all projects by the Principal Public Health Engineer or Senior Public Health Engineer. Trainee appointments are for a period of one year, following which incumbents receiving satisfactory ratings will be advanced to the title of Public Health Engineer without further examination. Does related work as required.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Either: A. A Bachelor’s Degree in engineering (Any Discipline: Environmental, Civil, Mechanical, etc.)*; OR B. Possession of a license to practice as a professional engineer in New York State.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENT: Possess and maintain a valid driver’s license.

2025 STARTING SALARY: County Employees- As per CSEA contract for Grade 13 New Employees: Grade 13: $33.6493/hr; $69,990.54 annually (40-hour work week) Following one year of successful traineeship, incumbent will advance to Grade 14, Step 03 – Engineering Differential: Effective Jan 2026: $41.7804 per hour ($86,903.23/annually) CIVIL SERVICE EXAMINATION IS A REQUIREMENT FOR APPOINTMENT EXAMINATION NOTICE TO BE ANNOUNCED AT A LATER DATE FINAL CANDIDATES MUST SUBMIT TO A FINGERPRINT CHECK AND CRIMINAL HISTORY AND BACKGROUND INVESTIGATION.
